Aadhaar Card 2026
Update, Download, Link Mobile, Correction
Complete Aadhaar guide 2026: download eAadhaar, update address or mobile number, correct name/DOB, link bank account, check enrollment status. All UIDAI services explained step by step — free and authoritative.
Aadhaar is the most consequential ID card ever issued in India — 140 crore people enrolled, and yet I still meet folks who got locked out of their bank account because their mobile number wasn't linked, or who paid a tout ₹200 to download something that's completely free online. Most Aadhaar problems are fixable yourself in under 10 minutes; the system is just badly documented. What trips people up most: address is the only thing you can update online — name, DOB, and mobile all require a physical Seva Kendra visit, and UIDAI doesn't make that obvious anywhere.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is Aadhaar mandatory?
Aadhaar is mandatory for government DBT schemes like LPG subsidy, Jan Dhan Yojana, PM Kisan, and income tax filing (PAN linking). For private entities, the Supreme Court ruled in 2018 that Aadhaar is voluntary — they cannot compel you to provide it.
How long does an Aadhaar update take?
Online address update: 5–10 working days after submission. Updates at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra for demographic details: 5–10 days. Biometric updates: up to 90 days (UIDAI standard SLA).
Can I have 2 Aadhaar cards?
No. Each person is issued exactly one unique 12-digit Aadhaar number, linked to their biometrics (fingerprint and iris). It is not possible to have two Aadhaar numbers for the same person.
What if I lost my Aadhaar number?
Use the 'Retrieve Lost UID/EID' feature at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. You can recover your Aadhaar number using your registered name, date of birth, and registered email or mobile number. The number is sent to your registered contact.
Common Aadhaar Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
❌ Mistake: Downloading Aadhaar using someone else's registered mobile
✅ Fix: You must use the mobile number registered with YOUR Aadhaar. If your mobile isn't linked, visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra — you can't do it online.
❌ Mistake: Paying agents or CSC centres to download eAadhaar
✅ Fix: Downloading eAadhaar from myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in is completely free. Anyone charging you is overcharging.
❌ Mistake: Confusing VID with Aadhaar number
✅ Fix: VID (Virtual ID) is a 16-digit temporary number that protects your actual 12-digit Aadhaar. You can generate a new VID anytime from myAadhaar.
❌ Mistake: Updating name/DOB online
✅ Fix: Name and date of birth corrections require a physical visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. Address is the only update you can do completely online.
❌ Mistake: Assuming one OTP is enough for all Aadhaar services
✅ Fix: Each service (download, update, lock) sends a separate OTP to your registered mobile. Keep your phone handy and don't close the page between steps.
