103rd Constitutional Amendment — Background
The Constitution (One Hundred and Third Amendment) Act, 2019 inserted Articles 15(6) and 16(6), enabling the state and central governments to reserve up to 10% seats in educational institutions and government posts for the Economically Weaker Sections of citizens belonging to the General category. The reservation is in addition to the existing reservations for SC (15%), ST (7.5%), and OBC (27%), and does not affect those quotas. The Supreme Court upheld the amendment as constitutionally valid in November 2022 (Janhit Abhiyan vs. Union of India).
