Voter ID (EPIC) Services — Register, Correct & Download

All Election Commission of India (ECI) voter services in one place — new registration, corrections, booth finder, and digital EPIC download. Everything is free and available online at voters.eci.gov.in.

Most people only think about their voter ID when an election is three weeks away — and that's exactly when the system is most overloaded and slowest to respond. I spent time mapping out every ECI voter service because I kept seeing the same panic: someone's name is misspelled, or they've moved cities, or they just turned 18 and have no idea where to start. The good news is all of this is genuinely free and online; the frustrating part is that the portals are split across two or three different ECI websites with overlapping functions.

One thing most people don't know: you don't need your physical EPIC card to vote — ECI accepts 12 alternative photo IDs at the booth. But your name must be on the electoral roll, and that's the part worth verifying well before election day.

Common Voter ID Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

❌ Mistake: Applying for a new voter ID after moving instead of transferring

✅ Fix: If you move to a new constituency, use Form 8A (transfer) — not Form 6 (fresh registration). Duplicate entries get deleted during rolls revision and you may lose voting rights for that election.

❌ Mistake: Using a non-ECI website to apply

✅ Fix: Only voters.eci.gov.in and voters.eci.gov.in are official. Many unofficial sites charge fees for a free service. Never pay anyone to register as a voter.

❌ Mistake: Not checking the electoral roll after applying

✅ Fix: Application submission doesn't mean you're registered. Always verify your name appears in the electoral roll at electoralsearch.eci.gov.in at least 30 days before an election.

❌ Mistake: Assuming the physical EPIC card is needed to vote

✅ Fix: You can vote using any of 12 alternative photo IDs (passport, Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence, etc.) as per ECI rules. The physical card is useful for address proof but not the only valid ID at booths.

❌ Mistake: Registering in two constituencies

✅ Fix: If you are registered in your hometown AND current city, one entry will be deleted and you could face legal action under Section 17 of the Representation of the People Act. Maintain one active registration only.
