Driving Licence Services
India 2026

Apply for a new driving licence, renew your existing DL, or replace a lost/damaged licence — all through the official Sarathi portal. Step-by-step guides with fees, documents, and timelines.

I wrote this guide after helping three friends navigate the Sarathi portal in the past year — one getting their first licence, one renewing after it expired, and one replacing a lost card. The portal has improved a lot since 2022, but there are still specific steps people get confused about. Everything below is based on what actually works today.

Common Driving Licence Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

❌ Mistake: Applying for a permanent DL before the learner's licence is 30 days old

✅ Fix: You must hold a valid learner's licence for at least 30 days before you can appear for the permanent DL driving test. Applying earlier gets your application rejected automatically by the Sarathi system.

❌ Mistake: Booking a driving test slot without practising on the actual test track layout

✅ Fix: The automated driving test track at most RTOs follows a fixed figure-8 or H-pattern. Watch the specific layout for your RTO on YouTube before the test day. The track layout varies by city — Mumbai's is different from Bengaluru's.

❌ Mistake: Not checking if your current DL is ECR or ECNR category

✅ Fix: Driving licences issued in different states sometimes have category errors. Before renewals or international driving permit applications, verify your vehicle class codes (LMV, MCWG, etc.) are correctly listed — corrections require a fresh application.

❌ Mistake: Renewing a DL that has been expired for over 5 years

✅ Fix: If your licence has been expired for more than 5 years, you cannot directly renew — you must apply fresh, which includes a new learner's licence and driving test. Most people don't know this until they're already at the RTO.

❌ Mistake: Visiting the RTO without an appointment for documents that can be done online

✅ Fix: Slot booking, fee payment, form submission, and address updates can all be done on sarathi.parivahan.gov.in without visiting the RTO. You only need to physically appear for the driving test and biometric. Save the trip.
