OBC Creamy Layer Rule: If your family's annual income (from salary, business, or profession — excluding agriculture) exceeds ₹8 lakh per year, you are classified as “creamy layer” and are NOT eligible for OBC reservation in central government jobs and central institutions, even if your caste is in the OBC list.

Q. How long is a caste certificate valid?
SC and ST certificates are valid for life. OBC (non-creamy layer) certificates are valid for 3 years and must be renewed.

Yes, in most states there is no government fee. CSC kiosks may charge ₹20–₹50 as service fee.
Q. Can I use a caste certificate from one state in another state?
No. Caste certificates are state-specific. You must obtain a fresh certificate from the state where you are applying for a job or admission.
Q. How many days does it take to get the certificate?
Typically 15–30 working days depending on the state and verification process.

Common Caste Certificate Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

❌ Mistake: Using a caste certificate from a different state

✅ Fix: Caste certificates are state-specific. An OBC certificate from Maharashtra is not valid for central government reservations in Karnataka or for central government jobs under Karnataka quota. Each state issues its own certificate using its own OBC/SC/ST lists.

❌ Mistake: Not getting a caste validity certificate separately for Maharashtra applicants

✅ Fix: In Maharashtra, a caste certificate alone is not enough — you also need a Caste Validity Certificate from the Caste Scrutiny Committee. Without it, your reservation benefit can be cancelled even years after it's granted.

❌ Mistake: Assuming sub-caste doesn't matter

✅ Fix: Many states have separate lists for sub-castes within OBC/SC/ST. If your sub-caste is listed under a different category than your main caste, you must apply using the sub-caste name exactly as it appears in the official government gazette.

❌ Mistake: Applying without a caste proof document

✅ Fix: The most common rejection reason. You need an old caste certificate of your father/grandfather, school leaving certificate showing caste, or a community certificate from a registered caste organisation. Applications without ancestral proof get rejected.

❌ Mistake: Believing OBC certificate gives automatic income exception

✅ Fix: For central government reservations (non-creamy layer OBC), your family income must be below ₹8 lakh per year. An OBC caste certificate doesn't automatically qualify you — you must also be in the non-creamy layer. Check the income limit for your state scheme separately.
