Overview

Aadhaar is India's 12-digit biometric identity number issued by UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India). NRIs (Non-Resident Indians) are eligible for Aadhaar โ€” but only if they have resided in India for at least 182 days in the preceding 12 months. This residency requirement means most NRIs who stay abroad for more than 6 months at a stretch are NOT immediately eligible. However, during visits to India that accumulate to 182+ days in a year, an NRI can enrol at any Aadhaar centre. Aadhaar is increasingly mandatory for NRIs who want to: open NRE/NRO bank accounts, link PAN card, file Indian income tax returns, purchase or sell property in India, and receive Indian government benefits (if applicable). OCI cardholders are also eligible for Aadhaar on the same 182-day residency basis. If you already have an Aadhaar but your address or mobile number is outdated (common for NRIs who moved abroad), you can update these details online through UIDAI's myAadhaar portal.

Eligibility

  • Indian citizens (including NRIs) who have resided in India for at least 182 days in the 12 months immediately preceding the date of application.
  • OCI cardholders who meet the same 182-day residency condition.
  • Minor children (below 5 years) of eligible applicants โ€” issued a baal Aadhaar (blue Aadhaar) without biometrics, to be updated on turning 5 and 15.
  • Note: NRIs who have NOT spent 182 days in India in the past year are NOT currently eligible โ€” they must wait until they meet the residency condition.
  • Foreign nationals (non-Indians) resident in India for 182+ days are also eligible โ€” this includes some NRI spouses with foreign passports.

How to Apply Online
