Aadhaar Update 2026 — Address, Mobile, Name & DOB

My mother moved from Thrissur to Bengaluru in March. After thirty-one years in the same house. We sat down one evening to update her Aadhaar address, and within ten minutes we had hit the one wall I should have seen coming: she didn't have a single document with the new address on it. Not yet. The flat was in my name, the electricity bill was in my name, her bank statements still showed Kerala. She looked at me and said, quite calmly, "So I don't exist here yet?"

We figured it out. Took us two visits to the Aadhaar Seva Kendra in Indiranagar and one document I didn't know existed — the Head of Family route. That evening became the reason I'm writing this post. Because Aadhaar updates in 2026 are not one thing. They're a dozen different things, each with its own fee, its own document list, its own "online or in person" rule, and in some cases its own lifetime cap. So before anything else, the matrix.

The three updates that confuse everyone

The matrix covers what. The rest of this post covers the why-isn't-this-working, the part where you arrive at the Seva Kendra at 9:45 am and the operator looks at your documents and says no. These are the three I see go wrong most often.

1. Address update when you have nothing with the new address

This is the case my mother fell into. You've just moved. The flat is rented or it's in someone else's name. Your bank takes 30 days to update its statement. Your gas connection takes longer. So how do you become a legal resident at the new address today? Through the Head of Family route.

Here's how it works. If any adult family member already has the new address on their Aadhaar, they can be your Head of Family. You both walk into a Seva Kendra. They authenticate biometrically and consent to extend the address to you. You produce a relationship proof — passport with parent's name, marriage certificate, PPO, ration card, MNREGA job card, or a UIDAI self-declaration on the prescribed format. Done. Fee is the usual ₹50. The Aadhaar issued will show the same address, with no document of your own ever needed.

One thing nobody tells you: the HoF doesn't have to be a blood relative. It can be a landlord, in principle, though the documentation gets sticky and operators sometimes refuse. In my experience, only spouse / parent / adult child go through without an argument.

2. Name change after marriage — the lifetime cap problem

UIDAI allows a maximum of two name changes in a lifetime. This rule is not on the front page of the portal. It's buried in the operator manual, and most residents discover it the third time they try to change something.

So if you're a woman who took her husband's surname after marriage and now needs to adjust the middle name to match her passport, that's already two updates. Any future change — say a divorce, or going back to maiden name — will be rejected at the Seva Kendra and you'll be asked to go to a UIDAI Regional Office with a formal application, gazette notification, and a written justification. It's doable, but it's a one-day job, not a 30-minute walk-in.

My advice, if you're planning a marriage-related update: do it once, do it carefully, and bring the strongest possible document — a gazette notification beats a marriage certificate beats a self-declaration. Keep one update in reserve.

3. Date of birth correction — the ±3 year wall

For anyone whose Aadhaar was enrolled in the early years (2010–2014), the DOB was often "declared" rather than verified. Operators were under pressure to enrol fast, and people from rural areas frequently didn't have a birth certificate. So a DOB got written in. Now, years later, that number doesn't match the SSC marksheet or the passport, and EPFO is rejecting claims.

UIDAI's rule: you can correct your DOB by a maximum of three years in either direction, once in your lifetime, at a Seva Kendra, with a strong document. Birth certificate is the cleanest. SSLC / Class 10 marksheet works. Passport works. PAN card alone does not work — and a lot of people get turned away because they brought PAN expecting it to be enough.

More than three years? You're now in Regional Office territory. Application, supporting documents, a wait of weeks. Frankly, if your DOB is off by more than three years, the chances are the original Aadhaar enrolment was wrong in other ways too — worth fixing once, properly.

Founder's note

What I keep coming back to is how much of this system assumes you've stayed put. That you have a bill in your name, an address that's been yours for years, a name that hasn't changed. For my mother, none of those things were true that week in March. The HoF route is brilliant when it works, but it exists because UIDAI eventually realised that millions of Indians — women who move after marriage, elderly parents moving in with adult children, migrants, people in joint families — simply don't carry a paper trail attached to themselves. If you're helping a parent with this, budget two Seva Kendra visits, not one. And carry their old Aadhaar even though the portal swears you don't need it. The operator will ask.

The online flow, end to end

For the updates that can be done online — address, name spelling fixes, language — the portal to use is myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. Log in with Aadhaar + OTP. Pick "Update Aadhaar Online". Choose the field. Type the new value. Upload a scanned colour copy of the document (PDF or JPEG, under 2 MB). Pay ₹50 via UPI or card. You'll get a URN — write it down or screenshot it. Status check happens on the same portal.

Things to know that the portal won't tell you. The document upload has to be a clear scan of an original — phone photographs work but glare gets rejected. The name on the document has to match the name currently on your Aadhaar, otherwise the request fails verification. And if you've already used your two name-change quota, the portal won't tell you upfront; it'll just reject after payment and you'll spend a week chasing a refund.

Children — the only free update left

The Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) at ages 5 and 15 is the one update UIDAI still does for free. The biometric template of a 3-year-old is different from a 6-year-old's, and again at 15 when the child becomes an adult. If you skip the MBU, the child's Aadhaar can be deactivated after a grace period.

So: book a slot on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in, take the child to the Seva Kendra, carry their existing Aadhaar, get fingerprints + iris + photograph captured. No fee. Allow about 45 minutes. Most schools now ask for the updated Aadhaar before class 1 admission, which is partly why MBU compliance has gone up sharply since 2024.

Booking a Seva Kendra slot — do this first

Walk-ins are technically allowed but in metros they're a bad bet. Indiranagar, Koramangala, Andheri, Salt Lake — all of them prioritise pre-booked slots. Use the appointment system on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. Pick a centre, pick a 30-minute slot, get an SMS confirmation. Show up ten minutes early. Carry the original of every document you've listed in the form plus one photocopy. The token system runs on time when the centre isn't overwhelmed; in monsoon, expect delays.

Frequently asked questions

Is Aadhaar address update free in 2026?

Online address update was free during a special UIDAI window that ended in mid-2024. As of 2026, every demographic update — online or at a Seva Kendra — carries a ₹50 fee. The only updates that remain free are the mandatory biometric updates (MBU) for children at ages 5 and 15.

Can I update my Aadhaar mobile number online?

No. Mobile and email updates require live biometric authentication at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. This is deliberate — if mobile updates were possible online, anyone who got hold of your details could redirect your OTPs. You will have to walk in. Booking a slot on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in beforehand saves you the queue.

How many times can I change my name on Aadhaar?

Twice in a lifetime. UIDAI tracks this. Minor spelling corrections sometimes get counted, sometimes don't — there's no public rule, it depends on the operator and the system check. If you're a woman planning to add a married surname and may also revert later, think carefully before using both attempts.

How much can I correct my date of birth by?

Up to a maximum of ±3 years from the DOB currently declared on Aadhaar, and only once in a lifetime. Beyond ±3 years you need to approach the UIDAI Regional Office with a formal application and stronger documents like a birth certificate or school leaving certificate.

I don't have any document with my new address. Can I still update?

Yes — through the Head of Family (HoF) route. If you've moved in with a parent, spouse, sibling or adult child whose Aadhaar already has the address you want, they can authorise the update for you. You need their consent at the Seva Kendra plus a relationship proof (ration card, marriage certificate, PPO, MNREGA card, passport, or a self-declaration on the UIDAI format).

What documents work as Proof of Address for Aadhaar?

The UIDAI list is long — passport, voter ID, ration card, electricity/water/gas/landline bill not older than 3 months, bank or post office passbook, registered rent agreement, latest property tax receipt, gas connection book, and several others. Mobile postpaid bills also work. The full list is on uidai.gov.in under 'Valid Documents'.

How do I check the status of my Aadhaar update?

Use the URN (Update Request Number) printed on the acknowledgement slip. Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in → Check Aadhaar Update Status, or the older resident.uidai.gov.in URL. Status moves through 'In Progress', then 'Approved' or 'Rejected'. Rejected requests usually mean the document didn't match what was on the form — you have to start over and pay ₹50 again.

If something goes wrong

UIDAI's helpline is 1947, free, multilingual, and surprisingly competent — better than most government call centres I've used. Email is help@uidai.gov.in. For unresolved cases you can file a grievance on the UIDAI portal and quote your URN. Most rejections come down to a document mismatch, and the cleanest fix is usually to redo the update with a different (stronger) document rather than to argue with the rejection.

For the broader story on what Aadhaar links to and why keeping it current matters, see our main Aadhaar services page. If your PAN is still showing inoperative, we have a separate piece on PAN-Aadhaar linking after the deadline.

The short version

Aadhaar updates in 2026 mostly cost ₹50. Mobile, email, DOB, biometrics, photo, gender — all require a Seva Kendra visit. Address and name spelling fixes can be done online. Name changes are capped at two per lifetime. DOB corrections are capped at ±3 years and once per lifetime. If you don't have a document for your new address, the Head of Family route exists and it works.

My mother's Aadhaar now says Bengaluru. It took two Saturday mornings and one slightly weary operator who eventually became quite kind once we explained the situation. The system bends, sometimes. You just have to know where.
